From its very birth in 2012, the Revista Univesitaria de Historia Militar appeared under the belief that war studies that were being developed in the Spanish-speaking historiography needed to be updated. Indeed, the main goal was to find new questions which were able to lead us to other perspectives, interpretations and debates for studying and understanding phenomena such as violence, war and military institutions. In this way, the aim of this project was anyone but making military history a useful and interesting paradigm and subject of study for our historiographic community.

Likewise, this project was born with the firm will of becoming a reference platform focused in promoting and favouring studies on war studies, understanding these from a wide perspective, both from a chronological –from Antiquity to nowadays– and a thematic –covering ranging from the political, economic or social to cultural, memory, technological or scientific– points of view. Thereby, we aim to introduce and promote the new historiographical trends developed in the international field into the Spanish historiography, as well as to serve as a connecting bridge between the most diverse research experiences from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

In this way, we are proud of saying that the RUHM is the first Spanish academic journal specialized in military history that implements a double blind peer-review policy –after the review of the Editorial Board itself– and that it's also indexed in various national and international academic indexes. Because of that, the RUHM aims to become in the following years a national and international reference within this area of studies, especially in a country where research about armed conflicts, violence or military institutions hasn't enjoyed the academic and university recognition that it has in other European countries.

Similarly, inside the constant –but not always fluid– dialogue between historiography and society, we strongly believe that the RUHM can and must become a bridge connecting and gathering all the public interest that the history of war arouses in society. Thus, the open-access nature of our journal is the best example of our social commitment and our desire to involve society in the last advances developed within the academic and university sphere around an important and necessary field of study as it is the history of war.

This dossier seeks to channel a dialogue around new ways of understanding the broad and heterogeneous phenomenon of women in wars, starting from a primary consideration of the role that discourses play in the shaping of identities and memories. The articles collected here deal with "wars" in a loose sense, prioritising the conflictive and violent nature of specific events in the recent past which, for different reasons, are understood by the authors as warlike. This includes both the great battles of the Napoleonic imaginary, or classic wars between states, and the "new" and interstitial wars, which are characterised by the privatisation of war violence, as well as by their asymmetrical and diffuse development, guerrilla wars and armed conflicts marked by state terrorism.
